This brings me to another question. I recalled yesterday trying the
insert key while in OO Writer and the insert mode status didn't seem
to change; the word on the status line didn't seem to change and it
still inserted text instead of overtyping it. Is this related or is
there an OO bug somewhere?

Hi David:
For various reasons, mostly which are historical and not understood very
well, the NumLock key is a very toxic key for X Windows in general. If
it were taken out back and put out of its misery, I would not complain.
We have a couple related bugs on this subject, which I hope we can get
to early on in the GNOME 2.24 release cycle:

Speaking of Numlock, I just noticed a problem today where the numlock
key doesn't appear to work properly inside Orca. At least while in a
terminal, pressing the numlock key each time just says "Num lock" but
the num pad keys still just read Orca functions like current word,
current line, etc. It's like the numlock toggle is not happening. I
don't know if this is just the terminal or not.
I was getting ready to post this problem myself. I'm using the desktop
layout and I noticed whenever I try using the numllock it still
manipulates orca instead. I've mainly trid this in gedit and openoffice
writer.
