Have you tried upgrading to a newer version? If you upgrade and it still
doesn't work reliably, it's time to benefit the community by reporting bugs.

Pdgin has a console-based equivalent called Finch, which should work with
BRLTTY, Speakup, Yasr or whatever you use to access the Linux console.

There are also excellent console-based tools for different messaging
protocols.
