Re: [orca-list] Orca continiously talking?

I believe what's happening here is a combination of two things:

1) Accessibility wasn't enabled for the desktop session, so Orca is jumping into text-based setup mode (I think) since it wants to make sure the user gets some form of accessible setup. The best workaround for this, IMO, is to get accessibility enabled by default for GNOME. This would eliminate a lot of confusion all around, and we're close to being there for GNOME 2.24.

2) The gnome-speech driver for eSpeak had an issue in it where it would block if too much data was sent to it. See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535493. I have a patch attached to the bug and would appreciate it if people could test it.

One of the reasons Orca speaks the whole set of voices is that the language/region specification of gnome-speech isn't well specified. Right now, the drivers just pass the speech engine's representation onto the consumer (Orca). Rather than trying to limit the choices based upon language, Orca just gives them all to you when you are using the character-cell based set up utility. The GUI based utility gives them all to you, but at least lets you scroll through them quickly.

I recently attached a patch to http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=397306 that attempts to guess the appropriate voice based upon your locale. With this, the default choice should end up being a voice for your locale if Orca can make some sense of the language information the speech engine is giving it. A side effect of this, I believe, is that this will also end up being the first choice in the long list of voices presented to you in character-cell setup mode.

Hi Vic,

Yes the problem certainly has been around since the version of Orca/Gnome-speech/Espeak that shipped with Ubuntu Feisty (7.04). And I'm glad it's been brought up as well because it definitley does need fixing. It's a pain in the ass.

I supplied those instructions because it was unclear how Tristan was running Orca in Ubuntu and booting the live CD is surely the most common way for newcomers to the platform although I take your point that it's not the only way in which people might be trialling it.

A patch for Espeak concerning speech being interrupted by keypresses while Orca is running has just been made available. Not sure if it addresses this problem.

Hi Paul,
The problem is that these instructions are almost impossible to follow if you are running Ubuntu inside a virtual machine and using ISO image instead of a CD. What often happens to me is that I boot up into regular Ubuntu and then enable Orca afterwards through "Sessions" dialog.

Thanks,
Vic

Hey,
You're not doing anything wrong. It's a bug with the Orca setup program. If you type your voice selection and press enter it will (eventually) stop rambling through alternative voices and get to the next part of the setup. But if you're booting from the Ubuntu CD and follow the steps to enable accessibility you should have Orca starting automatically when gnome starts up and you don't need to go through setup.
 1. Boot the CD.
2. give it a few seconds to load the language screen then press enter for English (or arrow up/down to choose another language and press enter). 3. Press F5 to get into the accessibility menu then press 3 and enter to choose Orca. 4. Press enter again to boot the system (or press down arrow and then enter to begin an installation).

    Hello,
I am new to Ubuntu and Orca, and was wondering why when I hit the
alt+f2 keys and typed orca, orca wouldn't let me choose what
voice/language to use with it. E-Speak just kept rambling on about 100 or so different voices or languages that it could be in, and I could only make it stop by hitting alt F2 again and typing the kill
command for orca (orca -q). What could I be doing wrong?
