Looking for some feedback on what is the most responsive speach system
to use with Orca. I'm using Orca with eSpeak, or whatever is
configured with Ubuntu Hardy by default. I am happy with the speach
quality, but would like it to be a little more responsive.
I really don't think espeak is at the fault here. It's responses
are just about instant.
1) Are you using Pulse Audio? In versions < 0.9.10, there is very slow
responsivenes, which is reworked in 0.9.11. I'm not sure exactly about
0.9.11, maybe it depends on how the client application (padsp here?)
interracts with it. I think it needs to ask for a low-latency setup
explicitly.
2) ALSA responsiveness is also more or less instant, so if you
are using ALSA not Pulse Audio, then most likely Orca or the
Gnome Speech output module for eSpeak would perhaps be too
slow for you. Others will be able to tell you more about this part.
