Hello Janina,
When I speak about audio and orca in fedora I mean I'm not able to play
a cd, or mp3 on my computer and hear speech at hte same time. I disabled
pulse audio in the line specified at speakupmotified.org
in /etc/alsa/alsa.conf
However, I am mnot able to accomplish speechh and audio at the same
time. When I'm using pidgign, I hear sounds, but orca's speech is
interrupted.
When I download the speakup connector, it says to copy the make file in
a directory which does not come to memory as of now. so I'm asuming I
don't have to do anything with the make file, just copy it in the
correct directory. After doing this, I would edit the grub file and set
speakup to start up automatically with the software synth by adding
sftsyn then reboot and expect it to work. I installed the 32 bit version
of Fedora on my system.

1.) It's unlikely you need edit anything in the Speakup Connector
makefile. You do need to build on a 32-bit system, though. Follow the
directions at ttsynth.com.
2.) If you're hearing sounds in addition to Orca while using Pidgin,
your cd audio problem isn't related to Orca. Try a different player.
Personally, I find totem works well, though I don't typically play cd's
on my computers.

Hello darragh and list,
I followed the instructions, but can't seem to get orca to play along side sounds. I put in an audio cd
and press play, but it won't since orca takes up the sound. The sound card is able to work with a number
of sounds simotaneously ince i'm able to hear music and noises from pidgin at the same time. Please
advise.
I'm also interested in getting tsynth to work with speakup. The speakup connector source code wants me to
specify values in the make file. I assume these are values from 1 to 10.
Thank you,
Alonzo

Alonzo,
Sorry, I meant to respond to your mail much earlier than now.
Look at the FAQ section on the Orca website at http://live.gnome.org/Orca
For your convenience, I've extracted the relevant text below:
How do I get Orca to speak alongside other ALSA applications?
NOTE to Ubuntu Hardy users: Ubuntu Hardy is investigating the use of PulseAudio to take care of a lot of
device contention. As a result, audio mixing should "just work" on Ubuntu Hardy and you shouldn't have to
monkey around with this stuff.
Hotly debated issue, It is not Orca's fault that it is set up like this, so the fix should be done
elsewhere, but if you don't care about the politics and simply want it to work then:
sudo apt-get install alsa-ossnow change directory:
cd /usr/lib/bonobo/servers/now edit using your favorite editor: If you are using Espeak then modify:
GNOME_Speech_SynthesisDriver_Espeak.serverand if you are using Festival:
GNOME_Speech_SynthesisDriver_Festival.serverreplace "festival" for "espeak" if you wish to modify the
festival synthesizer. On the third line of the file you will see (remember to use dashes instead of
underscores):
type="exe" location="/usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver"replace this with:
type="exe" location="/usr/bin/aoss /usr/bin/espeak-synthesis-driver"Note that if the
alsa-oss package is not installed then you will have a broken system and wont have any speech output, so
make sure it is installed.
save the file, and restart Orca, now you can use mplayer and suchlike to output sound alongside Orca.

Hello list,
Does anyone know how to make fedora mix sounds with gnome speech so I
can hear music and speech at the same time?
