Hello,
I have found that indexes start at zero so I did the following
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
options snd-ca0106 index=-1
device snd-intel8x0 should be first and the ca0106 the second one.
After doing this I can't get any sound.
I have booted to windows found a utility which can write to the ext3
file system and removed these options from my alsa-base but still when
trying to boot up my copy of ubuntu I am getting no sound.
However I can hear the click while the system is booting so I am sure
the sound devices are active. Perhaps my volume controls have been
screwed or something. has anyone some pointers where I might look
because without sound I can do nothing. so perhaps I can edit some of
the files remotelly, restart the machine and pray for the best.

Hi. I found the answer from a google search, but didn't keep the link.
You add lines to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
For example, I have 2 cards on this system: a sblive that uses the snd-emu10k1 driver and the
on board card that uses the snd-intel8x0 driver. To make the on board card always be card 0 and the sblive
always be card 1, I would add the following 2 lines to
my /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file.
options snd-emu10k1 index=-1
options snd-intel8x0 index=0
I need to worn you this is from memory, so it might not work.
Hope this helps.
Kenny
