I ran into the same thing when trying to use root shell from the
system menu.  I got prompted for a password and that worked fine but
after that... Just like you.  I'll bet there's an issue with elivated
privileges.  This is not distr specific either; I'm using Slackware 12
with Dropline Gnome.
