I just tried the suggestions below - in fact, that was the default on
my system and when I ssh to another machine, the title remains as
'terminal'. I was doing this under editing current profile. Is that
the right place? do I have to exit terminal and come back in for this
to work? I wondered if while in mutt the name 'mutt' would show up in
the terminal title?

Hi. On my system, the title is replaced by the name of the remote machine. Check the title and command
tab in your current
profile for gnome-terminal. In the combo box for dynamically set title, I hav replaces initial title as
the default.
This has worked for me when I still ran Gnome 2.18 as well as in Gnome 2.20.
