I have been using orca for a few months now under
ubuntu 7.10 and am still wondering a few things.
1. When using Orca with Firefox Grand
Paradiso or Minefield and arrowing down any page, orca seems to buffer links on
a page in a page layout fashion. This causes me in most cases to have to
either control arrow or manually tab to a link then press enter to get to
it. Is there a way to change the virtual buffer layout to something
different where the links will seemingly be on different lines to make it easier
to navigate? Also is there a hotkey that I am missing to be able to bring
up a links list?
2. Pigeon Messenger
Anytime I try to run the version of Pigeon
Messenger that is installed on ubuntu 7.10, after about 20 minutes or so Orca
makes the operating system almost non responsive. This especially happens
if I happen to leave focus in the contacts list unattended. To correct the
problem, I have to bring up a run dialog with alt+f2 and type orca again and
once orca reloads the OS is responsive again. Are there any settings that
I need to change that can correct this behavior?
3. General speed improvement
Being partly sighted I have been able to
compare the overall responsiveness of ubuntu 7.10 with and without orca
running. I have noticed quite significant slow downs in the OS performance
when orca is running. Particularly in application start up and shut
down. Most notably when using the Nautilus file manager installed with
ubuntu. Without orca running opening and closing the file manager window
is almost instant. With orca running it is all a bit laggy and sluggish,
especially when closing the file managers window. Is there anything I can
do to improve this performance?
My system specs are the following:
2.93 ghz Celeron
2 gigs DDR memory
Maxtor 7200 rpm Ultra ATA hard drive
Also I have my screen resolution set to 800 by 600
to improve response times because in the 1600 resolution that ubuntu is set to
by default Orca's response seemed even more slow and sluggish. Setting it
to 800 by 600 helped it quite a bit. I have also chose to use the E Speak
text to speech because Festival is of course too slow. Any performance
tips would be appreciated.
PS. Also are there any plans to bridge KDE
apps so that they can be used with Orca? Most notable of these is
Skype.
