I can't answer your other questions, but the one about Evolution is easy. 
Hit F7, or select "Caret Mode" from the view menu.  I find that it is 
easier to read messages from the preview pane than it is to open them in a 
new window.  To activate a link, you would arrow around until you are on 
the link, and hit the "/" key on the numeric pad to simulate a left click.
