Re: [orca-list] "Activate orca after login" suggestion

I think a desirable user scenario would be this:

1) The user uses accessible login to login into the machine. This can be done if accessible login is enabled (I'd hope we all push for this to be the default) and the user knows the accessible login gestures.

2) The accessible login is smart enough to carry the login preferences over to the user session, automatically enabling accessibility if it is not enabled and automatically starting the same assistive technology used for login if the user has not already selected an assistive technology to automatically start.

3) The assistive technology provides an "automatically start me" feature that is potentially enabled by default.

With this, the not-so-technical user can get decent access out of the box and not require sighted assistance or rely on a priori knowledge of listening for system sounds (speakers, disk drives, etc.).

Thoughts?

Unless I'm missing something here, you would have to have orca already
running in order for the user to find the General tab. That is gotten
to by either pressing insert-space or clicking the preferences button
from the Orca control panel. In either case, Orca has to be running
to do this.

I mentioned the alt-F2 deal because that is the standard way anyone
launches a command to gnome. The ubuntu live cd (I think) may have
some steps on how to start Orca automatically. The hardest part in
all this is knowing when the login is complete. I don't know if
Ubuntu uses a graphical login or not. Some of use in Slackware and
Debian I believe, often login to a text console and use 'startx' to
bring up gnome. Now one thing that perhaps could be added to Orca
might be a startup option that could be configured from the command
line 'orca -t' My initial setup of Orca was done that way where I
specified which speech system I would use and what language and
stuff. But again, Ubuntu might do things completely different. it
tends to be more turn-key than Slackware and others. I stuck with
Slackware because I didn't wanna have to go out and learn a whole
brand new distro on top of learning gnome and a new screen reader all
at the same time.

I would think the easiest way to get Orca started after login would be
to simply press Alt-F2, which opens the run dialog and then just type
'orca' and hit enter. Orca always comes up that way. After Orca is
running, then one can go into the menus and do whatever for permenant
auto start for future envokations of gnome/orca.
But what I am saying, is that one of my friends (who is not a computer
novis by any stretch of the imagination), couldn't find the "start after
login" checkbox. What if a new user logs in and can't remember how to
launch Orca? They're left with a strange, daunting, and above all silent
system.

Just a thought, remember back to when you started using computers!

Take care,

Hi All,
I have just filed a bug which I think will help a lot of new users.

One of my friends started playing with Ubuntu the other day, and he
asked how to get Orca started after login.

I realised that it was a little odd, having to go through all the menus,
so I wondered if it was possible to create a checkbox in the general tab
of the preferences dialogue to make this easier.

Here is the bug I submitted:
