I don't think they were added to support braille, but as far as I know,
OpenSolaris doesn't have any equivalents. This is one reason why I don't run
OpenSolaris, or, to be fair, FreeBSD either. Of course, it is possible to set
up another machine running Linux as a serial terminal, or to use ssh all the
time, but the access provided by BRLTTY on a Linux machine is so much better
than these alternatives, precisely due to the clean interface between BRLTTY
and the Linux virtual consoles.
I expect other operating systems will catch up eventually.
