Re: [orca-list] Problems with orca and evolution

Sorry, should have checked bugs first, but in fact it doesn't seem to be
quite the same as the bug you suggested is related. The differences are:
I have not got hide deleted messages checked in the view menu
This problem seems to be so anywhere in the list of messages, not just
at the end
I also am pressing the delete key inside the message list, not the
message viewer

To further describe this, I have just checked it again, and found in
fact, not only does it not speak the next message (which gets focus) but
if I press the up arrow to go back to the message orca says unread.
Doing yet further exploration in this area, the unread thing comes up
else where, eg. if I press the applications key (as if right clicking
the item) and select undelete from the menu my braille display shows
unread (followed by the message details) and orca after a very short
period says unread (this will also happen if you press escape to exit
the menu rather than press enter on an item).

The unresponsive issue may have a specific cause for the situation as
described (when new mail arrives), but my comments in the previous
message was more general, orca sometimes just gets unresponsive (you may
or may not have bugs for these) but I feel in general this possibly
could do with some attention, as sometimes I am waiting for orca to
catch up. Examples of this are sometimes when using firefox, evolution
while writing a message if the contents is quite long (e.g. if there are
some replies which really should be stripped from the end, but I think
it does need to get long for this to really be noticeable), when loading
some apps (it appears and then there can be some seconds while orca
catches up), etc.

May be this responsive issue I am asking a lot as I am used to the
command line with speakup and a hardware synth, which is much more
responsive.

Hi All:

The page for finding known bugs for Orca and application bugs that
prevent Orca from providing good access to them can be found here:

  http://live.gnome.org/Orca/Bugs

The Evolution-specific bugs can be found here:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/showdependencytree.cgi?id=423346&hide_resolved=1

I think the particular problem regarding the message list not updating
may be related to this known bug in Evolution:

  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351516

I'm not sure what might be happening with the unresponsiveness aspect.
It may be that Orca is being flooded with events from Evolution. I've
filed a new bug on your behalf for this:

I have noticed it for about the same length of time, but these really
could do with fixing. The one about speech while writing a message when
new e-mail arrives, I didn't realise speech returns after sometime
without needing to alt-tab, so is this due to an inefficiency in orca? I
know orca can sometimes get unresponsive and take a time to catch up.
These slow parts of orca lets it down and makes it seem inefficient to
use (when compared to other systems (command line, and sometimes even
windows).

Hi,

I see these same behaviors as well. I've always assumed that these were
part of the known problems with Evolution. However, if I wait for a while,
speech comes back without Alt-Tabbing. I'm running Ubuntu Feisty, Orca is
svn trunk, and I hide deleted messages in Evolution. For me, this problem
has been around since I started with Orca and Ubuntu in Edgy.

Subject: [orca-list] Problems with orca and evolution

Hello,
I don't know if anyone else has found this, and if not, then what have
you all done different to me?

I am finding couple of issues in evolution. The first is when deleting a
message in the message list, the focus moves down to the next message,
but orca doesn't say anything. The other issue is when typing a new
message, if a new e-mail arrives in my inbox orca stops echoing words (I
only have echo words on, not echo key presses), and does not start to
again until I alt-tab focus away and back.

The set up: orca from svn trunk (although I have noticed this for quite
a time, its not really new), evolution 2.10 with view set to not show
preview pane and not to hide deleted messages (I think those might be
the most important settings in evolution relating to this), gnome 2.18.3
(on a slackware system, gnome being from the slacky project
http://www.slacky.eu).
