Re: [orca-list] Success with Orca-2387 and Speech-Dispatcher backend

Hi. i don't notice any sutterring when I use the Gnome-Speech backend.
Personally though, i haven't used the Speech Dispatcher backend though, so
I can't comment on that. However, i can comment on the sound issues many
of you are experiencing with the lack of multichannel support. My card
(an SantaCruz--CS46XX chipset) seems to do its mixing in hardware. So I
don't see why it seems that ESD needs to be started in order to get multi
channel support in Gnome. I can say taht I'm sure that I don't need esd
at any other time. i.e. when running various instances of mplayer or
other application which writes to /dev/dsp. So their is not an issue of
device contention here. Any of you have any suggestions? Thanks and keep
up the good work on Orca

Hi all. A few minutes ago, I experimented with changing the speech backend from Gnome-speech's Espeak
driver to the direct Speech-Dispatcher backend. Surprisingly, I was able to easily begin
using the SD backend, with no problems whatsoever. One thing I noticed, and that I didn't see mentioned at
http://live.gnome.org/Orca/SpeechDispatcher, was that rate/pitch changes are
unannounced, despite them having taken place; hitting capslock+arrows doesn't yield higher, faster, or
slower anymore. Despite this, and the other minor bugs/stuff on the TODO list, imo this
backend is very usable; I'm actually beginning to prefer it over Gnome-speech, since I don't get the
occasional stuttering that I somehow got used to previously. Great job so far, and keep up
the good work!
