try
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
and then
make
sudo make install
After every step please read carefully the output in case of error
messages.
If you want to do a root operation as user type
sudo <command>
when asked for you password, enter you user password.
What you've tried was to change to "root" instead of "user".
If you want to do this, you must set a root password. For this do the
following:
sudo passwd root
you first get asked for your user password, submit it. Then type and
retype the root password.
If this was successful, you can change to "root". When typing
su root
you have to submit the root password.
