software is just a missing piece -- at least currently, and at least to
my knowledge.  Are there options out there I'm unaware of?

You might try nfbtrans which is a console app. I've never used it as Idon't have an embosser I just use refreshable braille. I don't see aubuntu package for it and I'm not sure where to download it from.good luck
