Hi Mike, all.

Try updating again.  Just now, on the problematic desktop, the following
updates became available:

evince
gnome-media
gnome-media-common 
libgnome-media0 
python-glade2
python-gobject 
python-gobject-dev 
python-gtk2 
python-gtk2-dev

I rebooted for good measure and Orca's working again.   These updates
were not available on my primary desktop, so I guess it was just a
matter of timing....
