version discrepancies?

Python 2.4 is available in Debian unstable and also in Debian testing.

The package python is only a dependency package corresponding to the
default version. You need to install the package python2.4 instead of
it.

This package is a dependency package, which depends on Debian's
 default Python version (currently v2.3).

It's also possible to install multiple Python versions on the same
system. /usr/bin/python is just a symlink pointing to the system's
default interpreter.
