I can't answer this but I think it is related to suspend/resume or
drivers more than NM in particular.    My netbook often is connected
within a second after resume while my Lenovo laptop sometimes takes 15
seconds.

Yes, right click on the NM icon in the panel, select edit connection.
 Then highlight the connection you want to modify and click edit.
Under the tab IPv4 Settings is an option to add search domains.
