E220 should work with NetworkManager (ModemManager). In order to found the
issue, please provide more information on what are the symptoms, how you
configure the connection, etc.

What NetworkManager and ModemManager versions do you use?
What lsusb says about the modom?
What's in /var/log/daemon.log?

You can follow the steps at [1] in 'Debugging NetworkManager 0.8.x 3G
connections' section to get detailed traces.

For a reference, you can look at [2].
