Seems a bit odd. Orange coverage overall is good, as good as any of the others (my regular phone is 2G on Orange). I assume 3 only roam on Orange for voice as well.
Maybe Orange only give 3's devices low priority - if so that would explain the problems getting a data connection. The device locks onto the network but is not given a connection when it requests one, maybe that's what happens on voice too?
Just a bit of speculation ... :)
Cheers
