Are you sure that you're running 0.6.1? It seems that it entered dapper
only two days ago. I don't use Ubuntu but vanilla nm-applet 0.6.1
definitively shows connection status (not connected, connecting, wired
connection) resp. wireless signal strength (when connected to access
point) here.
