Bill,
Just to verify if you're actually in ad-hoc mode, you can do this
(assuming eth1 is your wireless card):
iwconfig eth1 (and look for Mode: Ad-Hoc)
ifconfig eth1 (and look for an IP address in the 169.254.x.x range)
The presence of both those conditions mean you're actually in ad-hoc.
