As a side-effect this would simplify keeping both in sync, and with a simple post-merge hook it could be even automated to always have a +devel version for quick and clean testing. I'm recently considering to adopt a more modular approach like some other packages of mine[1]: a layout with separate branches for pristine upstream packages, sources and multiple branches for each distribution/package scheme, to ease interdistribution cooperation. This is part of a larger discussion anyway[2], but if any (non-stricly-deb) person is interested, I'd be glad to discuss it too...
