on *nix file systems, instead, you'd have a lot of scripts (sh, perl,
python, ruby, everything that's using an interpreted or /usr/bin/env) or
basically everything that's executable but not a binary. most of them,
especially the system ones that live in /usr/bin, do not have an
extension.
