Having the image thumbnailer externally would make it much much slower,
as it spawns a new program for external thumbnails. Furthermore, since
nautilus has optimizations like reading small image files directly
instead of thumbnailing this is an even worse idea.

The image property page is very small. Adding overhead by loading a
separate shared object (slowing down all symbol lookups, etc) sounds
quite bad.

You can compile it without it if you want. I don't see this as a big
problem.
