I've resized icons quite a bit in the past for these reasons:
* I've been unhappy with the size of an icon. Sure, I filed a bug to
get the icon sized fixed, but this is a nice way to get it fixed NOW.
* If I have a text file on the desktop, I can resize it and see quite a
bit of the text in the icon.
And I can imagine it being useful for people making CDs and DVDs to make
the nautilus window display interesting interfaces.
