While your post displayed the various behaviours of the BASH shell it
really wasn't much help. Take any distribution out on the net Redhat,
Mandrake, Debian, Suse etc and see what the default setting of the shell
is and you end up with the default behaviour. 99.99% of people will not
only never change the value of "symlink" but won't even know it exists.
It is this behaviour we should think of following.
