Patch looks good. Here are my thoughts on it:

The word Nautilus seems a bit repetitive in this message, since the entire
Preferences dialog is about Nautilus. Also, it's not quite accurate to say
"new windows". Any time you change the view away from "View as Icons" and
then back to "View as Icons" the setting will be reset to the preference,
with the current implementation. But maybe "in new windows" is the clearest
way to say this, even if it's not completely accurate.

A menu item for each of these seems great. But it seems wrong to have it in
Lay Out Items. Lay Out specifically refers to how the items are sorted and
lined up.

I'd also like to have this be a "Show/Hide" menu item that changes its text,
rather than a "Show XXX" that has a check box next to it.

In addition, we might want "Reset to View Defaults" to reset this setting to
the default. I didn't notice that in your patch.

This seems like a strange choice. I know there's some space available there,
but why should this one particular toolbar button get to claim that space
instead of sharing the toolbar with the other buttons?
