Actually, it's not supposed to be (the data files look like icon view
should be the default for all folder types). We also specifically
decided not to do that. I think what you're seeing is a bug. I'll see
if I can reproduce it myself.

(One reason we decided not to make music view the default for any
folder with MP3s is because people might have stray MP3s in their home
directory or the like).
