I suspect that the fix could be backported, but it's not trivial behaviour-wise, so I wouldn't apply it to the 1.8.x release series. In reality, I imagine a backport would work fine if you wanted to apply the change locally.

Subsequent patches in that series (pushed on the same day) simplified that a little, and may make the final diff easier to apply.
