Re: Is GTK+-3.8 too new?

Hi,

I am using Ubuntu 13.04, which was released 6 months ago, however, when I
tried to get the latest Meld from its repository I got and error message
saying:

"Meld requires GTK+ 3.8 or higher."

Ubuntu 13.10 does have GTK+3.8, but it has not officially released yet.

See https://mail.gnome.org/archives/meld-list/2013-October/msg00007.html

Meld HEAD doesn't actually have any official requirements... I'm
developing against 3.8 so that's the version number that happened to
go there. Feel free to remove the check and see what happens against
3.6. Let me know what you find!

Speaking more broadly, I expect that in future Meld will be bumping
version requirements more aggressively (i.e., we'll actually bump
version requirements sometimes). I think that by the time a GTK 3 port
is actually ready, 3.8 won't be unreasonable, though I hope that we'll
be able to get away with 3.4 or 3.6.

I am sad that I can't enjoy the latest version of meld(:

Believe me when I say that you're not really. Current Meld HEAD is for
enthusiastic testers only. There's really nothing in the way of
improvements there... yet. I hope that that will change soon.

cheers,
Kai
