Help, please

I'm currently using Midnight Commander to recover files from a Lubuntu 
Linux users $HOME directory. I'm seeing a symbol I don't recognize.

The home directory is presented as

?home

in pink text.

I'm familiar with mc showing missing symlinks preceded with a pink ! 
character, but not a ?. I'm assuming the ? indicates something is missing.

When I try to change to the directory I see a message "Cannot change 
directory."

Questions:

How do I access this directory?

Is the directory still on the drive?
