Anyhow I found the problem.  Because I don’t actively use Linux I’m not sure if it can be duplicated.

However, under the mc icon in Windows, under the “Options” menu I had inadvertently checked the box marked “QuickEdit Mode” which unfortunately gave me the undesirable results.

It works like a charm now.
