out of memory

Hello,

I somehow manage to land in an unreachable directory (long story short, 
I use screen and open a new screen and the prompt says: user host:
(unreachable)/$)

If I start mc at this moment the whole server locks up and later I see this 
in syslog:

Out of memory: Kill process 10063 (mc) score 818 or sacrifice child
Out of memory: Kill process 10063 (mc) score 822 or sacrifice child
Killed process 10063 (mc) total-vm:11277904kB, anon-rss:2626880kB, 
file-rss:40kB

Note: the 'unreachable' part remains a mistery so far. My bets are on 
home directory encryption (ecryptfs).
