Re: smbclient mount with MC?

The problem Felix has is he's using a bundled binary version of MC
which comes with SuSE 10.0. For some illogical reason, it's not
compiled with Samba support. If he compiles it from source, he'll lose
SuSE's nice UTF-8 patch and it'll become unusable, as SuSE's locale
(on the other hand, rather fortunately) uses UTF-8 encoding.

I'm having the same problem (only I don't use Samba much, so I've been
living without it), but that's why I asked for a link to SuSE's patch
a couple of days ago.

It would be very interesting to have this UTF-8 patch merged in CVS so
we can compile MC from source without having to hunt and apply it.

"--with-samba" is an option to the "configure" script which is run as
part of the build process. This option enables samba support in the
resulting binary.

To verify whether the Suse MC package supports samba, invoke samba like
this:
   mc -V

Then look at the output. There should be a line "Virtual File System:" -
if it contains smbfs then your MC has samba support built in. If it
doesn't, you can get the source RPM package and change the .spec file
to include the --with-samba configure option and then rebuild the MC
package.

Yes, it is direct support. It doesn't depend on the kernel or external
libraries.
