I remember this was done on purpose as you can see here:

As a result the following changes were made:

        * slint.c (slang_init): Limit screen size to 255x255 because of
        S-Lang limitations.

Maybe now it is time to find a solution to this problem ? Maybe it is
already fixed in S-Lang ?
