Re: Feature request: info about elevation

So we haven't really decided _if_ we want this.

One thing that speaks for it is that the tag is not used _all_ that much.
So when we encounter an ele= tag in OSM and show it in Maps it is most
probably on
sone object where elevation matters. Such as an hill or a mountain. So
it will not clutter up the bubbles
all that much.

I saw the screencast you made and...it's wonderful!
Thank you for your effort! :-)

Great!

So, could I help you adding some elevation tag for some important places?

Can I do it using OpenStreetMap website?

Yes, you can do it from the OpenStreetMap website. You need to get an account
and then you can use the in-browser editor to modify and add points
and relations.
We have plans to add editing of place data to GNOME Maps as well, but
that is something
to look forward to for 3.18 rather than 3.16

Thank you!
Paolo

Hi!

Thank you for the reminder!

We currently use OpenStreetMap to get open map data. And they record
points as latitude/longitude.
For altitude they rely on tagging by us users, using the "ele" tag,
see: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Altitude

We have started using the Overpass API to get more information, and it
would be entirely possible for us to get the ele-tag, where it exists.
I have no idea how many places has the tag set. But if we start
including it maybe you can help out by adding it to places? :)

Example of place with the ele= tag:

Thanks

Any chance to have this little/big feature implemented in Gnome Maps
3.16?
;-)

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=729404

I'm pretty sure that many users wolud be happy with this feature...

Thanks!

That's right.
Indeed, it would be a good improvement for every not-car movement.

What do you think?

Btw, thank you all.

For someone who's more of a noob regards to OSM. What does
elevation
mean?
How high up something is?

Yes. :)

How would it be used? In what situations does it help me as a
user?

I don't know really, planning a glide or basejump? :)

One thing that /might/ (I say might because I don't want us to focus
on
too many fringe cases) is showing elevation graphs for bicycle- and
pedestrian routes when we get alternate routes. Graphhopper provides
this
data.
