I used the simple install procedure proposed in the tarball's INSTALL
file: cmake; make; make install.

I've got gsettings-desktop-schemas installed, the missing development
headers shouldn't cause segfaults when running an installed program,
so you're very probably right about this not being the cause.

Not that I'm aware of, just xubuntu 11.10 with the ubuntu-updates and
ubuntu-security repositories enabled. Installed version of those
libraries:

libglib2.0-0:
  Installed: 2.30.0-0ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.30.0-0ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2.30.0-0ubuntu4 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64
Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

libgtk2.0-0:
  Installed: 2.24.6-0ubuntu5
  Candidate: 2.24.6-0ubuntu5
  Version table:
 *** 2.24.6-0ubuntu5 0
        500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ oneiric/main amd64
Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

As for Vala, I'm not sure which package is needed here, since none
seem to be installed on my machine. Could a simple missing dependency
be the cause of that segfault? If so, why does the version I compiled
myself work just fine?

None.

Thanks for the fast response,
