Hello Sir/Madame,
As per "http://upnp.org/specs/av/UPnP-av-RenderingControl-v1-Service.pdf"  "As described in Media Renderer device template, the devices’s ConnectionManager::PrepareForConnection() action assigns a InstanceID to the input stream".

I tried to mute a windows machine in our local network using "Universal-ControlPoint "but it failed so we thought since InstanceID was not correct. Is our understanding is correct?

It's possible, but so are many other things. Look at the actual error you get and find out -- universal-cp should have some warning output but maybe you have to look at the network traffic to see the error code. The service spec will list the error code meanings.

Different instances for RenderingControl _should_ separate various (input) streams and as the same document says "By convention, an InstanceID of 0 indicates that the invoked action should be applied to the post-mixed content." So 0 really should work.
