Yes, if you set it with gtk_button_set_image. The docs say:
"Note that it depends on the "gtk-button-images" setting whether the
image will be displayed or not, you don't have to call gtk_widget_show()
on image yourself."
I am not sure what happens if one sets the image directly via the
GtkContainer/GtkBin API.
