cannot see data in Gnome::Db::Grid

Hi I'm teaching myself the libgnomedbmm programming using this tutorial:

I'm trying to use this example:

http://www.gtkmm.org/docs/libgnomedbmm-3.0/docs/tutorial/html/ch03s05.html

the code works after minor tweaking, but I cannot see my data in the
grid, there are lines there I can select them but the data is invisible,
I suspect that the data is being drawn in the same colour as the grid
but I cannot find font/colour settings
