Mark, Claude,
I ran into the same problem.
1) To get /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.2.0/engines,
you have to re-build and re-install sawfish. When I copied engines'
shared libraries, my desktop apps were somewhat unstable.
2) To get the rest of my desktop working (white gnome menues, window
displacement and such), move your ~/.gnome2 directory out of the way and
let GNOME re-generate it.
