Yeah, it seems like the notification machinery in gtk+/gio requires an
application ID.
Yeah it needs a matching desktop entry in /usr/share/applications.
And it looks it doesn't work unless there's a MIME entry too.
It won't work too if the the desktop entry is declared hidden.
That's a lot of (undocumented) restrictions...
