libgnome and libgnomeui (which are wrapped by Gnome2) are going to be
deprecated in the near future (this process has already begun[1]); so
strictly speaking Gnome2::Sound is going to be deprecated as well.

at the moment there are no plans of replacing this API; there is some
talk about a freedesktop.org sanctioned API for sound events (with theme
support like the icon naming and theme specifications), but it's pure
vaporware as of this moment, and so it'll remain in the foreseeable
future.

if you want to play stuff, you'll have to fall back on using directly
GStreamer and its Perl bindings.
