Gnome2::Sound with arts?

Hi List,
Is there any way to use arts for Gnome2::Sound?
On my machine there is no Gnome and for this - usually - of course there is no
esd installed. So when I try to use any voice in a perl-GTK2 application I
get an error message on STDERR for missing esd but I don't want to install
esd.
