Thanks everyone for the input.
I at least now know what tools are available.
Gtk2::TieScalar sounds promising, and all other discussions were quite insightful.
I'm off to see a friend ( and Perl God ) on the weekend to see if we get a solution in sight.
I unfortunately can't go with Zach's solution because we really do have to make custom forms for each task, and lay out widgets in a nice user-friendly way - a table view simply won't cut it. We also have to have a bit of business logic in the app to stop stupid things from happening.
Hopefully by the time we're finished with this we'll have most of the building blocks for an MS Access replacement - which is something that Linux needs badly from my point of view - others are free to disagree.
