on redhat 8.0 i got OpenGL 0.54 to work by commenting out the
GLU_INCOMPATIBLE_GL_VERSION declaration on line 82 of glu_const.h --- it
appears to be something only available on Sun & SGI, maybe?  after that, the
package took about nigh on forever to compile (xsubpp generated 40k of C
source, which turned into 4 *megabytes* of assembly code which took so long to
compile i had time to find the temp file and read a bit of it), but the gears
demo works.

i have the XFree86-Mesa-GL and -GLU packages installed, as well as glut-3.7-8
and the corresponding glut-devel.
