Sounds like you have a broken installation in /usr/lib, while you'reactually using a duplicate in /usr/local? You could see if the/usr/local one is OK by setting PKG_CONFIG_PATH to/usr/local/lib/pkgconfig. Re-try the various pkg-config tests with thissetup, and take it from there.
