This solution is acceptable. Now I'd like not to use the

Yes.  You may set the config options via Gnome2::Print::Config, and then
create and render the job just as you would normally do inside the
'response' callback of a Gnome2::Print::Dialog.

It would be a better idea to use a dialog, though: just for consistency
with the other GNOME applications.
